Samtec Active Devices

Samtec Active Devices

Overview

A Samtec Active Device consists of a single board computer (SBC) such as a RaspberryPi running a web-based application comprised of a number of software services on top of a lightweight, IoT-geared OS (Balena OS). One common service is Samtec Device Share which is used to communicate with Samtec Device Connect. A web-server service is also running on the device which serves the web-based application GUI. From a PC, Samtec Device Connect is then able to discover the device, retrieve device info (such as name, app type, etc), perform quick actions (such as blink, update), as well as display the web-app.

The lightwieght OS and app services are bundled together into a single, bootable app image (.img). This app image can then be flashed (e.g. onto an SD card) and inserted onto a single board computer. Once the SBC is powered, the OS and app services will be automatically booted and available to be discovered by SDC.
